Soft Opening Announcement! + September 2022 Review
Mark Your Calendars: Our Soft Opening!
Saturday October 22 || 9AM - 1PM
NW Corner of Ave 196 + Rd 248 Strathmore
Saturday October the 22nd from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm we will be hosting our soft opening of the farm stand. Farmstead 248 is located on the northwest corner of Avenue 196 and Road 248 in Strathmore, CA. Although the permanent structure is pending, we’ll have a temporary stand and plenty of signage. We will have limited produce, potentially chicken eggs, and definitely bountiful herbs for sale. As we prepare to harvest in the days just prior to the opening, we will update everyone with more details regarding what will be available for purchase on our Instagram and the Facebook event page. The plan is to have products available for sale with some scheduled activities, light refreshments, and a tour of the farm such as it is so far. Look out Wednesday the 19th as we will send out a more detailed schedule for opening day activities. This is a soft opening and we plan on hosting a more grandiose grand opening come spring once we have a larger percentage of acreage planted and more of the buildings and systems built. We plan to be open every Saturday 9 am - 1 pm from here on out unless otherwise announced through our mailing list and on Instagram.
Literal Fruits of Our Labor
Our most plentiful harvests thus far have been herbs. Many varieties of basil can be found in our meals and cocktails. Pumpkins and squash also abound, and as we walk the field we can’t help but dream of future trays of roasted veggies and tasty fall soups. So far our most interesting squash are the pink banana squash due to their shape, size, hue and quantity! Besides squash and pumpkins we hope to harvest tomatillos, tomatoes, okra and beans shortly. Although not an edible offering, many varieties of gourds are also growing and nearing harvest. Veggies and herbs will be available for sale when the stand opens, while the gourds will have to be dried and cured for later availability.
Fall + Winter Crops
Our fall seeds are on their way and we hope to have them planted in the coming weeks. The plan is to keep our current plants as long as possible weather permitting while these new varieties come up. New veggies on the docket include radishes, endives, lettuce, pak choi, cauliflower, Romanesco, beets and turnips. Also this fall we hope to get some moringa trees started in the greenhouse for spring plantings.
Temporary Two Dog Farm
Late in the month we had an unexpected visitor. A skinny and scared cattle dog wandered onto the property. She has taken some time to build confidence and still needs to add on weight. We are currently fostering her and working with a local rescue to get her ready for adoption. In the meantime Charlie is enjoying playing and teaching his new friend Lasso to be a good dog. If anybody is in the market for a dog she’s a sweet girl eager to learn and eager to please.
The Birds
We don’t have much to report on those farm resident most fowl. The Quack Shack is now fully armed and operational. We hope to see duck eggs early next year. The hens and roosters seem to be growing by the hour. Currently the race is on to see if we can finish their new coop before the hens start laying eggs. Stay tuned to see who wins!
